Lightwave ADVENTure 15 - O is for Openness

One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshipper of God.  The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul”  Acts 16.14

In Luke 10.1-12, Jesus sends out his disciples in pairs, instructing them to seek “people of peace” – hospitable individuals who are open to the gospel message and can serve as bridges to their communities.  Later on, in the book of Acts, Lydia is a brilliant example of such a person of peace who invites the apostles to stay in her home.

Such “people of peace” are still important in Christian mission today:  Lightwave groups in Suffolk are frequently grateful to farmers, headteachers and publicans who want to make space for Christian things in their communities.  The openness of people of peace to God, before we have said or done anything, reminds us that it is God himself who opens hearts.

The openness of “people of peace” also challenges Christians to be open to unexpected partnerships in sharing God’s love.  Being open to people of peace often means that they can help us understand the local needs and context so that we can be a blessing and connect with people.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are the one who opens doors and who opens hearts to the gospel.  Open our hearts too to the riches of your grace, so that we are grateful for the wisdom and kindness which is offered to us and freely share the love you have given us.

Amen.
