“Jesus said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus”.  Matthew 14.29

These photos are from the fabulous carol service at Bungay church involving children from local schools.  Anyone who has put on a musical performance, knows that any worthwhile event always involves an element of risk.  Musicians are aware of a thousand things that could go wrong – but they go ahead anyway – and without this risk the beauty of the music and of the community occasion would never be experienced.

Being on mission with Jesus is like this.  It involves constantly taking risks.    Peter’s willingness to step onto uncertain waters is a picture of our call to step out and risk failure when we engage in Christian mission.  Peter, ofcourse is not a model of success:  He takes his eyes off Jesus and starts to sink.  We too will sometimes find ourselves floundering… but as Jesus caught Peter up in his arms to save him, so Jesus rescues us in moments of seeming failure:  The result of obedience is a deeper faith in Jesus and more glory to God

Pray:  Close your eyes and ask God to show you about the risk in mission to which you are called:  Perhaps it is talking to a friend or neighbour.  Perhaps it is organising a community service or event.  Whatever it is, where are you currently?  Are you still in the boat considering it?  Are you out on the water?  Are you floundering?  Have you experienced the help of Jesus?  “Lord Jesus, as I step out for you – keep me relying closely on your care and attending to your call.  Amen”
